In the middle of the Altiplano, on the way to Sajama park, the small village of Curahuara de Carangas hides a treasure: an early 17th-century adobe church whose walls are entirely covered in paintings, biblical scenes in still-vivid colours. It's known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano”. Around it, chullpas, pre-Inca burial towers, dot the plain.

High altitude. Above 3,500 m, altitude sickness (soroche) is common. Arrive gradually, drink plenty and take it slow on the first day.

Things to do

What to eat

  • Llama meatLean and tasty meat, often grilled or as “charque” (dried). Very common in Uyuni and on the Altiplano.
  • ChuñoPotatoes freeze-dried in the sun, an Andean technique thousands of years old. A surprising taste, worth trying at least once.
